DLRM
stands for DOCTORS AND LAWYERS FOR RESPONSIBLE MEDICINE.
It was
formerly DBAE - Doctors in Britain against Animal Experiments.
It was
founded in 1990. Its objective is the immediate and total
abolition of all animal experiments, on medical and scientific
grounds.
AWARENESS
CAMPAIGNS
DLRM has played
an important role in slowing down the mad rush by scientists
to transplant whole animal organs - teeming with bacteria,
viruses and prions - into patients.
DLRM has achieved
this by means of a mass media campaign, involving press conferences,
international congresses, letters to the press, radio and
TV appearances, and its petition to the UK Government containing
20,000 signatures, calling for a ban on such transplants.
COUNTERING
ARGUMENTS
DLRM opposes
animal experimentation, on scientific grounds, based on obvious
species differences; and believes that animal-based research
causes unnecessary suffering both to people and animals.
DLRM is aware that
scientists invariably fall back on the cliché, 'your
dog or your child, when trying to defend animal experiments,
hence disregarding the immense human damage caused when applying
the results of research on animals, to humans.
PUBLIC DEBATE
DLRM is committed
to encouraging public debate on issues such as: animal experimentation,
gene therapy and genetic engineering, animal-to-human organ
transplants and, most recently, cloning.
DLRM staunchly
supports patients' rights and informed consent issues. We
also endorse the protection of the environment as a whole.
